At the time of the Game Boy Camera's release in 1998, there was a Game Boy Printer to print Photos on to Nintendo's sticker paper. There are, in fact, many ways to get the photos off a Game Boy Camera and on to Computers and Devices. Also check out GameBoyManiac.com for their tips.
I call this the most reliable method since no modding is involved. You just need a Scanner. Print your photos from the Game Boy Printer and run the printed paper through a Scanner.
This also requires a capture card or a device for streaming. Put your Game Boy Camera in either a Super Game Boy for SNES or Game Boy Player for GameCube, then screen capture. Recommended photo resolution is 800 by 720 pixels.
Convenient if you want to save your smart phone. Find these devices on eBay or Etsy. Connect your Game Boy to the device with the Game Boy link cable, connect the power source to the device, Print, then access the devices IP Address for digitized photos.
You can take a photo of any Game Boy screen. The GBA SP has a backlight that helps give a clearer photo when taken with another camera.
